Heading Home

Dusk

On Thursday night, I hit the California coast near Oceanside. I had forgotten the “crazy Californian driver syndrome” until I was on a narrow mountain road winding down from the coastal mountains to the ocean (Hwy 78). It was a two lane road and for the whole time, drivers were tailgating and generally driving like maniacs. It was a civilian version of the Indy 500. Not fun at night and when exhausted. Read on …

The main attractions are Keys Ranch (where many people go to rock climb), Keys View (with amazing views of the Indio Hills and the valley), the Joshua Tree forests (of course), and the Cholla Cactus Garden. The second stop was a rapid elevator drop to 225 million years ago and the Late Triassic Period, when tropical trees were turned into stone. Read on …

San Francisco de Asis

Taos is well known as a magnet for artists: painters, writers, and photographers. They began arriving between 1898 and 1942, drawn to the beauty of northern New Mexico. Some of the more famous included D.H. Lawrence, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Ansel Adams. The former mayor of Taos, Phil Lovato, once said, “Taos is not a city, Taos is not a town, Taos is not even a place. Taos is a state of mind and a power center of the universe.” Read on …
