Surf's Up!

Surf’s Up

Right now, I am on vacation. I just thought that I would take two weeks off while I am down here in Baja California, do some surfing and relax with my friends Mike & Miriam. I had wanted to stick around Todos Santos longer, especially for the Dos Mares-Cabo 500, a 500 km Baja road rally race that goes from La Paz to Cabo, ending back up in La Paz for the finish. But random events, like romantic follies and a faulty car transmission, killed those plans, aside from the fact that I had to get back to Denver to pay bills and separate two neurotic and lonely cats. Bandito Surfer

Todos Santos is a small town (population 4000) near the tip of the Baja peninsula. Known as a an artist colony and surfer town, it is just south of the Tropic of Cancer. A lot of artists from Santa Fe and Taos have migrated to Todos Santos, feeling that these towns have become too touristy and sprawling. Surfers come down largely from California (but also from Colorado) to catch waves at Los Cerritos or head further down the coast to the Los Cabos area. Read on …

Cruise Ship

The 18 mile stretch of coastline at the tip of the Baja peninsula between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas is known as Los Cabos. Both towns are known for their luxury accommodations, beautiful beaches, and the wealth of activities available, ranging from surfing, golfing, sport fishing, snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing, scuba diving, horseback riding, or just laying around on the beach with a drink in hand. Heading Right

Right Break

Los Cerritos beach is about 10 km (6 miles) from Todos Santos. It’s the main surfing beach in the area with a right point break that is supposed to be good for beginners (check out the guidebooks), but I have never found that to be the case. The sandy bottom is great but Cerritos often gets big, with bone crushing waves, and there are often many surfers out, with the hazard for beginners of getting cut by their fins or run over by their boards. Jazz Celebration at Metro

Jazz. Jazz music is something that I have always enjoyed. It’s not often that I get to experience it on a firsthand basis. The radio, cd’s and yes even records (vinyl, those big black plastic things that some of us still enjoy) do not do it justice. To be there and witness the passion that jazz musicians have for the style is incredible. The jazz fest at Metro featured music from local and touring artists. The Bad Plus, Kathy Kosins, Groove Society and The Faculty Septet headlined 3 nights of performances. I was there with my camera in hand. Click on the photo above to view the gallery.
