Extrovert

Monday, April 23th: Goldie Hawn is a funny woman. And spontaneous, loveable, and quirky. Channeling Marilyn Monroe, she has the endearing “I can’t believe I’m hearing this”, ditzy blonde thing down to an artform. She is the girlfriend most women would love to hang out with, go shopping, and discuss the finer points of lip gloss. Winging it at the Buell Theatre last night in front of a packed crowd of around 3,000, Goldie said up front, “I’m not a speaker. I just talk.”, as she improvised her way–burping at times–through her personal life and career as an Academy award winning actress. Read on …

Rolling Around and Around

Friday, April 20th: The Denver Roller Dolls held their season finale at the Denver Coliseum with the Bad Apples going head to head with the Green Barrettes in front of an excited, beer drinking crowd of about 2,000. The Bad Apples, dressed in black and red uniforms, finally prevailed over their khaki green rivals, the Green Barrettes. But it was close. And hard-hitting. And scary to watch. The women hammering each other as they whip around the rink to score points, not a few ending up tasting the concrete floor or plowing into spectators sitting at the edge of the track. Read on …

Green Power Couple

Sunday, April 15th: Prominent Democrats have been giving Denver a lot of love recently. John Kerry is the latest Democrat to arrive in Denver, site of the upcoming 2008 Democratic National Convention. Although he is not running in 2008, Kerry was in town with his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, the Heinz ketchup heiress. The Washington power couple were both at the Tattered Cover in LoDo to promote their new book on the environment, This Moment on Earth. Attracting a heavy media presence (including CSPAN) and several hundred spectators, the Kerrys spoke about their passion for the environment, fielded questions from the audience, and signed copies of their book. Howard Dean

Rebel Insider

Thursday, April 12th: Howard Dean rolled into Denver today. Dean, the former two term governor of Vermont, Democratic candidate for President in 2004, and current chairman of the DNC, didn’t scream or rant or do anything untoward (commonly referred to as his “I have a Scream” speech, or simply “the Dean Scream”) at the Denver Convention Center. Although he missed his meeting with John Sweeney, the president of the AFL-CIO, he did talk about his desire to build a new kind of Democratic party, one that is competitive in every state in the union and particularly the West: “We believe that the road to the White House leads through the West. And the road to the White House will include Colorado, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona. And we’re not above doing all kinds of things to pick up some ground in Utah and Wyoming.” Read on …

Project Runway Redux

Wednesday, April 4th: Modelled after Bravo TV’s successful Project Runway series, The Fashion Project is Denver’s softer, kinder version of the show with a group of 12 Denver designers facing a challenge every week. The Project runs from April 4th-25th, every Wednesday evening at Tamarac Square. Because no one is voted off when a winner is declared, it is kinder and gentler than the “auf weidersehen!” of the Germanic Heidi Klum on Project Runway. This week’s challenge was to design a “little black dress” (LBD), a competition that was won by Gino Velardi, a Colorado native and clothing designer who “focuses on high end clothing cut from luxurious fabrics with a classic style and fearless sexuality”.
