Thursday, July 12th: Sweet Land is a gorgeously rendered meditation on love, the immigrant experience in 1920’s America, farming, the joys of simple living, small town communities, and the rapacious greed of bankers (Woody Guthrie said it best, “Some men rob you with a gun, others with a fountain pen”). In brief, the film centers around Inge, a feisty, independent German-Norwegian, who immigrates to the U.S. as a mail order bride right after World War I to marry Olaf, a hardworking Norwegian farmer tilling the black soils of southern Minnesota.
