Monday, July 16th: A lone, armed man, now identified as Aaron Snyder by the Rocky Mountain News, entered the State Capitol building on Monday at around 2 pm and was shot dead by a Colorado State Patrol trooper. The trooper is a member of the Executive Security Unit at the Capitol building. This unit consists of both troopers and civilian security guards and is a special division of the Colorado State Patrol responsible for the security and transportation of the Governor and the First Family. Governor Ritter was uninjured in the incident but was on the first floor of the State Capitol building, close to where the man was shot. According to the Denver Post and 9News, Snyder earlier in the day rented a tuxedo, and while at the State Capital proclaimed himself “the Emperor”, and said that he was going to take over the state government. Far from overthrowing the government, and obviously suffering from some kind of condition, he never made it out of the building alive. Read on …

Thursday, July 12th: Sweet Land is a gorgeously rendered meditation on love, the immigrant experience in 1920’s America, farming, the joys of simple living, small town communities, and the rapacious greed of bankers (Woody Guthrie said it best, “Some men rob you with a gun, others with a fountain pen”). In brief, the film centers around Inge, a feisty, independent German-Norwegian, who immigrates to the U.S. as a mail order bride right after World War I to marry Olaf, a hardworking Norwegian farmer tilling the black soils of southern Minnesota. Both Director Ali Selim and lead actress Elizabeth Reaser (Inge) were on hand at the Starz Film Center in Auraria to answer questions after a special screening of Sweet Land. Read on …
